Whiskies Of The World

If whiskey was a person, it’d probably be a combination of Rihanna and Ryan Gosling. I can’t quite explain that analogy, but I can assure you that it’s pretty factual. Needless to say, whiskey, as smooth as it is, has arguably the biggest personality of all the spirits.

Last week, I had the opportunity to sample this spirited spirit, and quite a variety of it during the Whiskies of the World expo here in Atlanta. The expo makes stops in a handful of cities each year and brings with it a bevy of whiskies. We’re talking upwards of 200 expressions. It’s heaven for whiskey lovers.

I’m not gonna lie to you guys, there’s only so much whiskey I can drink straight up, so after sipping on Glenlivet, Russell’s Reserve, and other potent (though delicious) whiskies during Whiskies of the World, I soon opted for some lighter sips (Crown Royal Apple, a bevy of Bird Dog Whiskey flavors, etc). I was also really hoping to get my hands on a whiskey-based cream liqueur. You know, with it being egg nog season and all, but no such luck.

I can always appreciate a food/wine festival or expo that incorporates some kind of educational component. And Whiskies of the World featured exactly that with their Masterclasses. Thankfully, I was able to snag a seat at one of them. The Masterclass I attended was a craft panel discussion featuring reps from American Spirit Whiskey, Independent Distilling, and Richland Rum. Given that each of those brands is Georgia-based it was interesting and pretty exciting hearing about the future of distilling in the state. Not sure if most people are aware, but due to Georgia’s strict liquor laws, opening and running a distillery can be difficult. So, it’s refreshing hearing about the new distilleries and tasting rooms coming to Georgia within the next year.

Last week’s Whiskies of the World expo in Atlanta served as their last stop for the year, but if you reside in the California area, the expo will make stops in San Francisco and San Jose in March of next year.
